About the Competition

The Open International Competition of Urban Landscape Design starts in Moscow for the second time at the end of August 2018.

This competition took place for the first time in the summer of 2017. The contestants' gardens and the special projects beautified  the boulevards, streets and squares of the Russian capital, becoming part of the city's landscape solution for a while. About 7.2 million people, locals as well as numerous tourists, visited those garden shows that summer.

The city festival “Moscow Summer, Flower Jam” - 2017 was declared the "Event of the Year" by the VIII Russian National Award Committee for Landscape Architecture, which is the highest Russian professional award in the field of landscape architecture, landscape art, landscape construction, beautification and gardening.

The theme for this year's competition is BRIGHT COLORS. The Competition will be held in four professional and one amateur nominations.

The public areas in all districts of Moscow, including the cities of Troitsk and Zelenograd, will become the exhibition venues for the implementation of the best Competition projects. It is planned to install 1,528 exhibition gardens implementing the competitors’ projects and also more than 15,000 amateur flower gardens will be displayed in all the districts of Moscow.

More than 4 million flowers and plants are to be used for the creation of landscaped gardens in this Competition.

Stages
The Competition will be held in 3 steps:

Stage 1 - application and selection of finalists

Participants submit applications which include information about the participant, a portfolio of relevant projects and a sketch of the idea of the show garden.

The last date of projects submission for the applicants is 30/05/2018 11 pm.

Detailed requirements for submitting an application are provided in the "Contest terms and requirements".

Stage 2 - work out of documentation for the implementation of exhibition gardens

The finalists of the competition selected by the Expert Council on the basis of submitted applications, develop documentation for the subsequent implementation of their projects submitted at the first stage.

Stage 3 - implementation of exhibition gardens and selection of the best projects

Central streets and squares will be decorated with the exhibition gardens and flower beds which will form attractive urban open spaces, green oasis for citizens.

The winners will be selected by the Jury voting. The results of the competition and the names of the winners will be announced within the framework of the city festival "Flower jam" at the end of August.

The authors of the best realized projects receive a reward in each nomination
The professional Russian and foreign teams of landscape architects and designers are invited to participate in the Competition. As for the beginning landscape designers and florists, there’s a special amateur nomination for them, called – the “Flower gardens at the district exhibition venues".

Nomanation 1 - Professional

«Large Exhibition Garden (100-200 square meters)»

The Gardens are to be implemented in public spaces of Moscow: in streets, squares, pedestrian zones, in boulevards and parks.

There will be 26 projects of Large Exhibition Gardens implemented, including the 15 finalist projects in this nomination, and one of which will be declared the winner by the International Jury voting results. The authors of the winning project will receive a cash prize of 2 million rubles.

The exhibition venues for the best projects implemented will be allocated in the public spaces of all the districts of Moscow, including the cities of Troitsk and Zelenograd.

The gardens that will appear in the districts are to be chosen by the city residents themselves. For this purpose, they can take part in the internet voting organized on the web sites of the local state sponsored initiative groups "Moscow Seasons" and "Active Citizen".

Along with the aesthetics, the projects are to carry out an important ecological task: they will attract beneficial insects into the city center zone, as it was witnessed during the previous year's garden exhibitions, thus promoting better ecological balance within the urban area.

Nomanation 2 - Professional

«Small Exhibition Garden (24 square meters, 6mx4m)»

The projects of this nomination are to be implemented in ready-made modules that are quick and easy to install and can include podiums, benches, ornamental flowerpots, green hedges and other elements included in the core set.

There will be 39 projects of the nomination realized, including 19 finalist projects, among which the International Jury will select one winner. The author of the winning project will receive a cash prize of 1 million rubles.

The exhibition venues for the best projects implemented will be allocated in the public spaces of all the districts of Moscow, including the cities of Troitsk and Zelenograd.

The gardens that will appear in the districts are to be chosen by the city residents themselves. For this purpose, they can take part in the internet voting organized on the web sites of the local state sponsored initiative groups "Moscow Seasons" and "Active Citizen".

Nomanation 3 - Professional

«The “Urban Place for Rest” nomination»

These are the projects of small compact areas of 3x4 meters, which may serve both as recreation places and mobile flower gardens with natural flowers, shrubs and trees.

Their small size will make it easy to integrate them into the urban environment almost everywhere and thus it will add some colors of nature to those places where no lawns, no small parks, no permanent flower beds, no large exhibition gardens can be created.

All the best projects will be implemented in all districts of Moscow at the end of summer 2018.

The winning project will be selected by the International Professional Jury and the author will receive a cash prize of 500 thousand rubles.

Nomanation 4 - Professional

«The “Student projects Competition” nomination»

It’s a competition of projects of landscape compositions for public spaces of Moscow's creative clusters, accomplished by the students of specialized educational institutions – by the future professionals in the field of landscape design and architecture. The nomination was established in order to involve the creative youth into discussions of what we want to see in Moscow and to address the issues of urban landscape design.

The finalist projects in the nomination are to be implemented in the territories of Moscow's fashionable creative clusters. The author of the winning project announced by the International Professional Jury will receive a cash prize of 500 thousand rubles.

Nomanation 5 - Amateur

«The “Flower gardens at the district exhibition venues" amateur nomination»

The school yards in all the districts of Moscow will become exhibition venues where many amateur flower gardens will be implemented and displayed. The mobile flower beds modules are to be installed there, so as everyone will be able to create his or her own flower garden. The organizers of the competition are to provide participants with planting materials, all the necessary tools and assistance from professional gardeners.

The winners of the amateur flower garden contests will be determined by voting directly on the sites. The authors of the best flower gardens will receive memorable gifts and diplomas.

In total, more than 15,000 amateur flower gardens will be created within the contest. It is planned that about half a million people will take part in the amateur nomination.

Jury of the competition
Special Projects
The projects of the members of the International Jury and the members of the Expert Committee of the Competition – the internationally renowned professionals in the field of landscape design and architecture – are to make the Masters Show, so to speak, to the Competition. Their gardens of art will decorate the most significant exhibition venues in Downtown Moscow, introducing Muscovites (residents of Moscow) and visitors with current trends and latest developments of the world landscape design.
Forum

The International Landscape Design Forum

The program of the forum, which will be held already for the second time, includes open discussions, round tables, classes and lectures, communication of professionals, informative activities and events for the general public. This year, a special Youth Activities Program will be added to all the above mentioned.

Flower Jam 2017
First time the contest was held in the Summer of 2017 in the framework of the city festival "Moscow Summer. Flower jam."

This was confirmed at the VIII Russian National Award for Landscape Architecture, where the festival "Moscow Summer. Flower Jam." became the winner in the category Event of the Year ".

Temporary projects of the contest participants of the competition and special projects of curators and the professional jury members decorated the squares, streets and boulevards of the capital, becoming a part of the city landscape. This was unique experience in the world practice of landscape design competitions which proved to be very successful.

During the festival these projects were seen by 7.2 million Moscovites and visitors of the capital. The gardens became so popular among citizens that some of them remained in the city until October.

A total of 260 flower gardens, 9 exhibition gardens and 4 special projects were constructed. It took more than 60 000 flowers and plants to create them.
